Conserving power-are we serious?

With a bit of effort and some cost, I’ve  just managed to reduce my power bills by $35 a month. I changed the shower head to reduce the hot water flow (my two teenagers howled) and changed all the incandescent lamps in the house to low energy bulbs.

The local power supplier, a monopoly of course, has been spending loads of money on ads telling users about all the things you can do to save electricity.

This month they announced they are putting up charges by 15%! The logic appears to be: use less, they make less; so they put their prices up. If I find more ways to economise, they’ll have to put their prices up again. Maybe it’s just me, but there appears to be some disconnect in logic here.
